Barratt Homes partnership launch event is a success!

Hundreds of construction students from NULC packed out the College's Auditorium last week to attend the launch of the Barratt Homes partnership.

Speakers included Neil Baldwin, MD of Barratt Manchester, Phil Torr, Contracts Manager, Mark Donlan from the NHBC and Martin McVarnack, SHE Manager.

College announces new partnership with Barratt Homes

Hundreds of construction students are set to benefit from an exciting new partnership between Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) and one of the country’s leading house builders, Barratt Homes.

The partnership will be officially launched on Thursday 3 February, at a special induction event to be held from 1.30 – 2.30pm in the College’s Auditorium on Knutton Lane.

Entrepreneurship success for construction students

The construction students below (with lecturer Mark Turner were some of the winners of the Enterprise Week challenge (15 – 21 November).

Their ideas included:

·         Student of the month

·         Interviews with students on the plasma screens

·         Help with travel

·         Storage space for hair and beauty students

·         More use of texting

·         Enrichment activities as part of tutorials

The College is now taking these ideas forward and is hoping to implement as many as possible!

Well done!

Students become entrepreneurs of the future

Students celebrated the third Global Entrepreneurship Week (15 – 21 November) last week by getting involved in a range of ‘Apprentice-style’ challenges.

More than 250 first year students from various subject areas took part in a series of workshops, encouraging them to create new, dynamic ideas for the College to potentially use.

Activities will include researching innovative gap year ideas and destinations, planning a marketing recruitment campaign to attract new students to the college and building community relationships. The winners of each topic will receive a monetary reward and certificate to recognise their achievement.

Construction students consider higher education at university

Level 3 Construction students at Newcastle-under-Lyme College attended a further education open event at Staffordshire University's Leek road campus.

The students received information from experts, and were given a tour of the campus.
Many of the Construction students began studying at Level 1. Now on level 3, some are considering beginning their careers in Architecture and Construction Management by going to University.

Thomas Vale Construction visit NULC

Newcastle College students recieved an informal presentation from a project site manager at Thomas Vale Construction. Thomas Vale are now building a brand new fire station opposite the College on Knutton Lane. Andrew Hall offered his knowledge to the students and talked about health and safety on a building site, and the quality of work that should be expected.
