Students attend Designer Safety Awareness Day

Students studying the BTEC in Construction attended the Designer Safety Awareness Day at the North Staffordshire Medical Institute.

The event was organised as part of the Work Well Together campaign by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Students spent the day attending presentations and gaining practical advice from industry experts including HSE, HKS Architects Ltd, Managing CDM Ltd and Laing O’Rourke.  The presentations covered a range of topics including Construction Regulations, Design, Risk Assessments, and Construction methodology.  The students also had the opportunity to review a case study on the new build of the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

At the end of the day students were presented with a certificate and health and safety pack which will help them during their Construction studies.

RAF workshops inspire students

Engineering and Construction students at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) were invited to take part in two days of workshops with the Royal Air Force (RAF).  The aim of the workshops was to advise students in the types of careers open to them once completing their studies at NULC.

The workshop is an annual event which consists of various team and skill building exercises including physical activities and communication activities.  The workshops are organised by lecturers Rob Sproson and Paul Glover, who this year decided to extend the workshops in to a two day event due to popular demand.

Sergeant Ian Pringle, from the RAF Motivational Outreach Team said: “The purpose of the last few days was to work on building the team and communication skills of the students. The students have completed a range of challenges to help them to develop and understand the personal skills that are required for a career in the military.”

He continued: “The students at NULC have shown great potential and the activities today have opened their eyes to what is available from a military career.”

NULC Skills Squad visit International Finals of WorldSkills

Students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s (NULC) recently formed Skills Squad enjoyed a visit to the International Finals of the WorldSkills competitions in London.

The Skills Squad were joined by staff and mentors as they visited Excel in London on Thursday 6 October.  The inspiring visit was organised to show the Skills Squad the types of competitions and awards they could be eligible to enter in the future.

The NULC Skills Squad is made up of 18 talented vocational students who have been identified through a range of competitive activities organised within individual faculties.  The current Skills Squad is made up of students studying vocational courses in Hair and Beauty, Construction, Engineering and Care.

Members of the NULC Skills Squad receive an array of support from the College in recognition of their talent and to support them in their future entry into the WorldSkills UK competitions.

The NULC Skills Squad will be showcasing their talents by providing demonstrations and hands on activities to prospective students at Open Events throughout the year.

Part-time engineering & construction courses for adults available now!

Adults in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and Cheshire who want to study part-time can now choose from a range of part-time courses which have launched at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC).

Local adults are advised to log onto the College’s website www.nulc.ac.uk/adults to view the part-time courses on offer and, in many cases, enrol online.

Part-time courses are available in areas such as engineering and construction, where you can study a range of professional qualifications in areas such as Bench Joinery, Site Carpentry, Painting and Decorating, Bricklaying, Mechanical Technology, Engineering and more.

There is also the option to study for a Higher Education qualification in Engineering such as the Foundation degree (FdSc) in Mechanical Technology.

The majority of our construction and engineering courses are taught at the new purpose built Skills and Technology Centre on our Knutton Lane campus.

Construction students survey the college

NULC students studying the Level 1 Diploma in Brickwork were today invited to shadow a building surveyor.

Alex Smith is a surveyor for Disabled Go, an award-winning disability organisation that produce online access guides in a great deal of detail for a huge range of venues.  Disabled Go were today surveying NULC to report on its disabled access.

A number of Level 1 Diploma in Brickwork students joined Alex in small groups throughout the day to discuss UK building standards and to see how access for people with disabilities is an integral part of construction.

Construction students build career connections

Construction students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) benefited from their first site visit to Barratt Homes’ construction site in Silverdale. An exciting new partnership between NULC and one of the country’s leading house builders, Barratt Homes means that Construction students get to meet industry experts and experience life on a real construction site.

The students taking part in the visit to the Barratt Homes’ construction site, were shown around the development by the site manager and given the opportunity to ask questions and meet the various teams who are currently working on the site.
